Join us for the 18th Youth Parliament Programme

The Cayman Islands Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association will again be hosting the Youth Parliament (YP) Programme for the 2024-2025 school year. Applications are due by midnight on 20th September!

The YP programme includes lectures on parliamentary practices and procedures, the Standing Orders of the House, the roles of Members of Parliament, and the ins and outs of House business.

Participants will select a debate on a Government Motion, a Private Member’s Motion, or a Bill — all selected and written by the students. The first meeting starts on 1st October, and the programme will culminate in a live televised debate at the House of Parliament in March 2025.

Students who participate must:
• Complete the application form by 11:59pm on 20th September 2024 by email to [email protected]
• Be between the ages of 15-18
• Attend meetings each Tuesday afternoon from 3:30 to 5:00pm
• Attend meetings each Saturday from 10:00am—3:00pm throughout February, 2025
• Attend the final live debate on Monday, 10th March, 2025, from 10:00am to approximately 2:00pm.

Selection will be based on students who:
• Maintain a minimum Grade B in high-school-level English writing or literature;
• Display leadership qualities;
• Possess good communication and comprehension skills;
• Have at least 90% school attendance; and
• Have an interest in law or political science.

Participants should also be ready to take an active role in debates and proceedings of Youth Parliament, with the understanding that whilst sharing a common Commonwealth heritage and similar age, fellow participants not knowing each other prior to the event may come from very different societal backgrounds.
