Hon. Sir Alden McLaughlin Elected as Ninth Speaker

Hon. Sir Alden McLaughlin, KCMG, MBE, KC, JP, Member for Red Bay, was elected by the Members of Parliament this morning as the Ninth Speaker of the Parliament of the Cayman Islands. The nomination was put forward by Hon. Roy M. McTaggart, Leader of the Opposition, and was seconded by the Premier, Hon. Juliana O’Connor-Connolly. There were no other nominations and the new Speaker was subsequently elected with the unanimous support of the MPs.
The former two-term Premier of the Cayman Islands was first elected in 2000, and served as the Minister of Education, Training, Employment, Youth, Sports and Culture from 2005-2009. For his contribution to the constitutional development in the Cayman Islands, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II awarded him the MBE in 2010. In September 2021 he was appointed Queen’s Council (now King’s Council), and in January 2022 was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. In February 2023 he was invested by His Majesty King Charles III.
