On 1 March 2025, the Parliament of the Cayman Islands was officially dissolved as per Proclamation 3 of 2025.
This dissolution is in accordance with Section 84(2) of the Cayman Islands Constitution Order 2009, which mandates that the Governor dissolve Parliament at the expiration of four years from its first meeting after a general election, unless dissolved sooner.
Following the dissolution, Proclamation 4 of 2025 has been issued, setting the general election for members of Parliament on Wednesday, 30 April 2025. This aligns with Section 84(3) of the Constitution, stipulating that a general election must be held within two months after every dissolution of Parliament.
The recent adoption of the Parliament Standing Orders 2025, effective from 28 February 2025, introduces modernised procedures for parliamentary operations.
While these Standing Orders primarily govern the conduct of parliamentary business during sessions, they also outline procedures related to the dissolution and summoning of Parliament. Members unanimously approved these amendments to enhance legislative processes, transparency, and efficiency within the Parliament.
As the Cayman Islands approach the general elections on 30 April 2025, citizens are encouraged to participate actively in the democratic process, ensuring the continued prosperity and governance of our islands. Visit the Elections Office to learn more about the general elections.
